Percussion consists of anything you “hit”. These instruments create sound by vibrating when struck. The percussion family includes bells, xylophone, marimba, triangle, tambourine, maracas, claves, and many more. Spots are limited, so students interested in percussion should have a good 2nd choice in mind just in case.
Physical Characteristics
Students should exhibit a great deal of coordination in gross and fine motor skills.
Other Considerations
Just because you are always tapping on things does not mean you are a natural percussionist. We look for good academics, good discipline, good motor skills, and a background in piano is helpful. Students will start on a drum pad on a stand and a rented or purchased practice xylophone. After some time on beginner percussion, students will play a variety of school-owned instruments. Therefore, percussionists need a large stick bag filled with quality sticks and mallets.
