Euphonium

The Euphonium (you-PHONE-nee-yum) is a brass instrument that looks like a small version of a tuba. It has a medium-sized mouthpiece and creates a sound when the lips vibrate (“buzz”) into the mouthpiece. Its range is similar to a trombone, but it uses valves.

Physical Characteristics

Euphonium players should have moderately full lips, but not too full. A slight overbite is okay, but an underbite would hinder a good sound.

Other Considerations

Students with an abundance of orthodontia will find the euphonium mouthpiece more comfortable than trumpet or horn. The euphonium is a school-owned instrument.
