Saxophone

The Saxophone is a “single reed” instrument that creates sound when the reed vibrates on a mouthpiece. Spots are limited, so students interested in saxophone should have a good 2nd choice in mind, just in case.

Physical Characteristics

The saxophone embouchure (mouth position) requires students to make a flat chin; the vast majority of students can do this. Due to the weight of the saxophone on the neck strap, students must be able to sit up straight when asked.

Other Considerations

When purchasing or renting, please e-mail us to ensure you are getting a quality, reputable name brand. Saxophone players are also responsible for maintaining a working stock of 4-6 quality reeds. After some time on the Alto Saxophone, students have an opportunity to play Tenor Saxophone and Baritone Saxophone.
